Understanding The Differences Between Skilled Care VS. Custodial Care

age in place aging articles & resources blog care options guidance planning for aging

When deciding on the best home care option for yourself or a loved one, it's crucial to understand the available choices and how each can fulfill your needs. Let's first distinguish the differences between Skilled Care and Skille Nursing vs. that of Custodial Care:

Skilled Care/Skilled Nursing

Skilled care involves medically necessary assistance provided by or under the supervision of licensed medical professionals. It includes tasks like medication management, health monitoring, intravenous therapy, catheter care, wound dressing, blood draws, and injections.

Custodial Care

Custodial care, on the other hand, is provided by individuals without professional medical training. They assist with daily activities such as eating, bathing, dressing, grooming, household chores, and occasional errands. This option suits seniors with minimal needs who prefer aging at home. Family members can often supplement care by administering medication or attending medical appointments.

Choosing the Right Care

If you're unsure which option suits your situation, consider these questions:

  • Does the care require a licensed nurse?
  • Which parts of the day pose challenges for the older adult?
  • What current obstacles do we face (like work schedules or coverage gaps)?
  • What professional resources are available?
  • What can we afford financially?
